Examines the rise of antisemitism in German universities between 1880-1900, based on contemporary student publications. In a crowded academic labor market, students feared Jewish competitors and rejected them ideologically as aliens. Students at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität who had organized to support the Antisemiten Petition in 1880 founded the Verein Deutscher Studenten, which spread throughout Germany and called for the exclusion of Jews from student society. At some universities, especially Berlin, liberal rectors tried to block the VDSt and encouraged the "silent majority" to organize against them. Liberal students formed the Freie Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung which, however, took hold only in Berlin, and was vilified as a "Jewish" body. Discusses antisemitism in numerous student organizations and in the traditional fraternities. Jews joined socialist or non-party organizations and formed their own fraternities which often combated antisemitism. The students of the 1890s, indoctrinated with antisemitism, became the academic elite of the Nazi era.
