Mary Lawson’s quietly powerful family drama is a heartbreaking story about tempting fate and living with the consequences.

Arthur and Jake are brothers yet worlds apart. Arthur is older, shy, dutiful and set to inherit his father’s farm. Jake is younger, handsome and reckless, a dangerous man to know. When Laura arrives in their rural community, the fragile balance of the brothers’ rivalry is pushed to the edge of catastrophe…

"Another note-perfect take on coming of age in northern Canada, as beautiful as the landscape is stark, from Lawson (Crow Lake, 2002)... With all the elements of melodrama, Lawson instead crafts a deftly interwoven story of family and loss... The calm and beauty of the setting pervade Lawson’s second novel, intensifying the heartfelt pull of its simple human drama."  -  Kirkus Reviews
